Really like that input John. Confirms it really happens . Thank you . I have heard stories about this cracking , actually very common apparently — among older studebakers . Most studes are ten plus years older than 300. They say there , at their club, never put radials on the old stude rims, they crack , but they have a “side alley “ problem about tubes vs tubeless thrown into the logic . A cracked rim and a tube seems lethal , as no air leak till rim edge breaks off ! >From a technical perspective , they have to be fatigue cracks possibly initiated by stress risers due to scratches or tooling marks when it was made .. It is odd ( to me) it is way out at rim it cracks where stress would be low compared to central part near bolts . Maybe thinner metal or beaten up more at factory in forming round shapes .Or heat treat , or not . And loads there would only be high from “ sporty driving “ around corners ( looking at you John) . Where were the failed wheels ? Front ? And about how many miles ? In the 1971, I had to replace two of the 14”x 6 1/2”wheels on our 1957 300C which developed cracks in the rim under the bead resulting in a slow leak (7/1/1971 & 12/17/71). We were on our way home from South Dakota by way of Yellowstone Park, in Idaho we aired up several times and then finally had the wheel with tire put in a water tank and found the rim was cracked. Six months later while home another wheel had to be replaced. The 300C had the old belted tires which results in a very hard ride compered to radials. > > > > John > > > > From: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> On Behalf Of 'micke.sundbom' micke.sundbom@xxxxxxxxx [Chrysler300] > Sent: Thursday, July 23, 2020 12:29 PM > To: Jamie Hyde <jamie.hyde@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; VANNICE, M ALBERT <mav4@xxxxxxx>; 'Fern Rivard ' <crc@xxxxxxxxxxxx>; 'Chrysler300' <Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>; nick@xxxxxxxx > Cc: 'Michael James' <chrysler300f@xxxxxxxxx> > Subject: RE: [Chrysler300] Re 14 inch wheels for 1960 chrysler > > > > > > > > > > > Rims are very much a safety aspect.
