Really like that input John.
Confirms it really happens . Thank you .
I have heard stories about this cracking , actually very common apparently — among older studebakers . Most studes are ten plus years older than 300. They say there , at their club, never put radials on the old stude rims, they crack , but they have a “side alley “ problem about tubes vs tubeless thrown into the logic .
A cracked rim and a tube seems lethal , as no air leak till rim edge breaks off !
>From a technical perspective , they have to be fatigue cracks possibly initiated by stress risers due to scratches or tooling marks when it was made ... It is odd ( to me) it is way out at rim it cracks where stress would be low compared to central part near bolts . Maybe thinner metal or beaten up more at factory in forming round shapes .Or heat treat , or not .
And loads there would only be high from “ sporty driving “ around corners ( looking at you John) .
Where were the failed wheels ? Front ? And about how many miles ?
Thanks again for this info ,
John

We were on our way home from South Dakota by way of Yellowstone Park, in Idaho we aired up several times and then finally had the wheel with tire put in a water tank and found the rim was cracked. Six months later while home another wheel had to be replaced. The 300C had the old belted tires which results in a very hard ride compered to radials.
