Matt and Group, Here's an email exchange from two years ago on this gas tank sending unit issue, and response from John Grady - Noel > ---------- Original Message ---------- > From: John Grady <jkg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > To: Noel Hastalis <cpaviper@xxxxxxxxxxx> > Date: 07/29/2018 2:50 PM > Subject: Re: Gas tank sending unit > > > Hi Noel, All these aftermarket units seem to be of poor linearity between float position and gauge reading -/ it drives you nuts. I had little signs in my cars for where is the real empty . Typically they ( 60 up) read near empty with still 5 gallons in there .you think gauge is wrong and run out. Go above F when full . The ohmic values can be off too , but they are published , Usually not too far off. have actual F ohms somewhere but basically about ten ohms or less full ( up) and 85-90 down . One answer is to be sure float is just about touching bottom of tank dry .. maybe 1/4 “ ..bend rod . Then E really is E . ( can run unit in your hand too , ground flange with clip lead ) ; bend arm for that . Full may be off a bit but sort of not the issue ? Often the old one can be cleaned up and used . If not rusty inside. Original Problem is usually poor ground . Solder a wire direct to metal outlet tube and ground to body sheet metal . Run in your hand before putting it in . If still reading above E when all the way down you could add ? 5-10 ohm 2 watt resistor in series will drop gauge ( iterate ) .. But usually I think it is the bend and travel of float is all wrong . Not ohms. Universal mopar fit for dart or something they sell to all ... > I empathize ... ps messing with gauge itself a big no no , usually makes things worse . Test gauge , 10 ohms to ground should be near F , 90 near E . Can buy various resistors at radio shack .. or on line . 2 watt best ,1/2 watt might burn out > Hope this helps, John > PPS . Temp and oil pressure gauges are the same electrically .. good to know . Work on ~ same ohms changes . > 57 gauges totally different than 60 up , which are thermal gauges . 57 are magnetic . First hand info above is 300F , but I think approximate same ohm values in use ,in 57 but not sure > Sent from my iPhone > > > On 28 Jul 2018, at 10:58 pm, Noel Hastalis <cpaviper@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: > > > > Hi John, > > Yesterday I was talking with the mechanic of a local buddy of mine, who said he's having problems with this aftermarket gas tank sending unit. The gas gauge is not reading the top 1/4 and the bottom 1/4 gas level in the tank. He called and spoke with Jeff Carter's associate, who thinks the problem is this unit has too low a level of ohms, to properly handle the full range of the gas level reading. > > He's got this problem on his '57 NYer, '61 NYer and '57 Adventurer. > > Does this make sense to you? > > Noel ------------------------------------ Posted by: Noel Hastalis <cpaviper@xxxxxxxxxxx> ------------------------------------ To send a message to this group, send an email to: Chrysler300@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to bob@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or go to https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/all/manage/edit For list server instructions, go to http://www.chrysler300club.com/yahoolist/inst.htm For archives go to http://www.forwardlook.net/300-archive/search.htm#querylang ------------------------------------ Yahoo Groups Links <*> To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/ <*> Your email settings: Individual Email | Traditional <*> To change settings online go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Chrysler300/join (Yahoo!
