Good Morning Barry and Friends,
I assume this is the upcoming Mecum Auction 300-G you're referring to -
John Begian and I first saw this coupe at RM's Auburn, Indiana Labor Day 2013 auction - by RM's subsidiary back then, 'Auctions America.' The body looked decent, though its stance was a little higher than stock. Whoever did the interior really used their imagination on this car. It bid $60,000, showed as "Sold" and then was listed as a "No-Sale," so don't know the backstory with it.
It was accompanied at that auction by a Mardi Gras? Red G convertible that received the same, but light tan, interior treatment. Its body plate read WW1 - Alaskan White. The convertible had a trans fluid dump under it and a tape sign on its steering wheel saying it starts in gear, along with chocks on one rear wheel. Its odometer read 000 miles.
This black coupe was curiously missing its body plate, and its odometer read 459 miles. A few photos attached from 9 years ago. Almost enitrely nonfactory interior - dash pad is not a '61 ribbed unit, steering wheel doesn't have the clear molded section, padded steering wheel hub wrong, red vinyl headliner wrong, overstuffed red stamped leather/vinyl seats wrong, door panels have stuffed silver vinyl creation instead of the correct beautiful brushed aluminum panels, and missing '300' numerals, and more.
I haven't seen the convertible since '13, but this coupe has popped up at various auctions over the past several years. I see Mecum also listed it just 5 months ago, at its March 2022 Glendale auction as sold for $88,000 ($80,000 hammer + $8,000 buyer fee to Mecum). And now it's appearing at the upcoming Mecum Monterey 2022 auction.
Both these Gs were known to our Club back in 2013 when Gloria saw their serial numbers.
