RE: {Chrysler 300} 1963 Chrysler 300 steering column coupler

Mark-

If the J column is the same as the F & G and your wheel “chucks” as though its lose you likely have a shot shaft rubber isolator where the shaft enters the box. That rubber part which also retains the horn ground strap deteriorates and allows the steering column to move in such a way as to give the impression the column bearing is shot or the steering wheel nut is loose.

Don Verity fixed mine in about an hour and forty five minutes, removing the column from the car. I watched him do it, obvious he has done it many times.

Bob Merritt’s video series includes a session on repairing the horn ground, which involves removing the rubber isolator. Watch that video and it may give you the courage to do it yourself.

Hello All,

At the suggestion of Noel Hastalis, I contacted “Steer & Gear” in Ohio and spoke with Carmen regarding the coupling.

The part is only around $20, but he told me that it could take up to 6 hours of labor to change the coupling.  He also said a helper may be required and of course the right tools to do the job.

Hello All,

I found the discussion about steering wheel play very interesting and one of the factors could be a worn out steering column coupling and not the steering gear box.

I looked at the ’63 parts manual and I found a part called “coupling” and the part number is 1850524.  Is this the right part number for this coupling?  Section 19-15-0 “Steering Gear Tube and Coupling”

There was not an enlarged picture in my parts book showing individual pieces.

Does anyone know a good place to buy one of these?  Thank you.

300ly,

Mark Lindahl
