Interesting sequence in the build as I have a copy of the original data punch card (thanks to Gil Cunningham) with the body number printed on it (matching my data tag) but the serial number (VIN) and engine number were hand written. It seems the VIN and engine number were allocated to the body on the assembly line in case the vehicle sequence or pile of engines got out of order. Probably wouldn’t be tolerated these days. So, 3/3 matching numbers. Not uncommon, but good for bragging rights! LoL! I found the engine number on my 300C in the same place. Obviously stamped on the chassis after the engine dropped in and before the body goes on. Matching number. My own experience is that I could not find any number stamped into the right rear frame rail on the 55 C300 when I had the body off, but there was a fair amount of surface rust/scale on that car. On the other hand, when I had the body off of my 57 300C, it was a very clean frame (southwest car), and it was clearly visible on the frame in front of the right rear wheel. Recently, I was asked if I found the serial no. that was stamped somewhere on the frame of the car, somewhere near the right rear wheel. While I had the body off the frame, I looked for the number when I hand sanded the entire frame. Parts of it had noticeable rust but not enough to obliterate any stamping. The question still remains so I did some research on-line with no results. One such site offered a search window. I entered the serial no. for my E and it came back as a '59 Corvette C1. I also checked the engine as some models had the serial number of the car stamped on it. Nothing there, either.
