Basic difference is:

Alternators deliver a steady voltage despite speed. Basically same volts at idle or 4K rpm

Generators deliver varying voltages depending on rotational speed. Faster = higher volts

Steady means lights and gauges work smoothly. Batt charges better.

The existing generator would need to be rebuilt or replaced and I have an alternator. I know there are differing opinions but I believe an alternator is preferred. Why would all manufacturers discontinue generators for alternators in the early 60's if they were superior?
