Re: {Chrysler 300} 300 F on eBay

Noel, I remember this car (146818) well.  It looked fantastic.  The owners had just purchased it and I think Hickory Corners was the first time they showed their new acquisition.  I haven't seen it again either, but attached an additional photo of it.

Dave, the microfilm for the VIN of the car in the auction shows it was originally shipped to a dealer in Anchorage, AK.

There were no additional clearcoat layers back in the day, as we have these days, that allow for larger metallic flakes and a much greater gloss. Chrysler applied enamel paints in the '50s and '60s.

I've attached a couple photos of 300-F #146818, that I saw at 2 Mopar shows back in 2014, where it won Best of Show at both of these events - Mopars at the Red Barns at the Gilmore Auto Museum, in Hickory Corners, Michigan, and Mopars on the Mississippi in Dubuque, Iowa, where Dave Schwandt also joined us with his Polar Blue F coupe, Carl Bilter with his J and Rolland Westra with his H.

Bob Hayen arguably over-restored it in Montana, but it sure looked magnificent wearing  its deep shade of PP1 Toreador Red paint. Bob even modified it to add 4-wheel disc brakes. Its Iowa owner has not been a 300 Club member, and I haven't seen this car again in the past 10 years.

Pardon my ignorance on painting, but back in 1960 when Chrysler were spraying metallic colors, did they put a coat of clear over the base or was it color and gloss in one coat?

Although this car is stunning it looks to me to have too deep a clear and out of character for 1960.  I may be wrong but it is what I would expect to see on a modern car.   I recall when I had my 300C painted, my painter tried to convince me how much better it would look with clear over plain old Cloud White for crying out loud.  I continued to tell him no until he gave up....  Otherwise I think it would have looked like a modern car and that is not the point unless it is a retro-mod.

Just my opinion at least for non-metallc colors.  But I would like to know generally how older metallics were done in the day and whether they had such a deep gloss.

Tom and Group,

This F coupe is a known car, included in our 2023 News-Flite #175 listing our Club's known Fs by serial number, with factory paint code. This F is listed as PP1, Toreador Red (metallic), which indeed was one of the four standard offered 300-F exterior paint numbers. Its owner is listed as Jerry Kopecky, who's a restorer based in Iola, WI - see more info in this link -

Some of our Wisconsin and Minnesota are familiar with Kopecky. Clearly, he's no longer the owner of this red F.

Looking at the 40 or so photos of this F, its exterior does indeed look gleamingly beautiful with an almost candy apple gloss. But looking at the interior and engine shots, we also see these appear somewhat more vivid than natural, so I suspect the photos were subjected to some enhancement before posting online - kind of a teaser to our eyes. That's not to say this car isn't really beautiful, because it does look great.

It’s a beautiful car. Is the shade of red correct?
