Re[2]: {Chrysler 300} A much discussed topic.

Ford may have introduced the fluid (late 60's?) and "F" was in the spec number I think.   F was non-friction modified and Dex/Merc was friction modified.

Don taught me that the two fluids are also compatible and can be mixed if you don't know what is currently in the trans.

I switched the J from Dex to F and have seen no significant difference in operation, if any difference at all.

I had F in the 57 NYer but switched back to the modern repalcement for Dex.  Type F is still stocked (amazingly) at most Walmarts but is more expensive then Dex.
I could get a 4 or 5 qt. jug of Dex/Merc at Walmart for about half the cost of the equivalent number of qts of type F as I recall.
All these fluids have risen in cost dramatically in the last 4 years but don't get me started on inflation as that will put me in list server detention.

I always thought the “F” in Type F stood for Ford, so I felt a little creepy pouring a Ford product down the transmission tube of my 300C.

Hello Gary -

Consistent consensus is to use Type F fluid in the 1957 Torqueflite transmission.  Your mechanic must have misunderstood:  that fluid is easily available at virtually every AutoZone, O'Reily's and Walmart.   (The original specification was for "Type A", which is indeed no longer available).   Don Verity, the 300 Club Torqueflite guru, recommended Type F when he rebuilt my 300C transmission and it seems to work fine for the last 9 years.

Mechanic is ready to fill up the second rebuild torqueflight in the '57 C and need to give him the answer.

I've always thought type F, but told not available.

Said he thought dextron type 3 (?) was closest to F.

Will appreciate all suggestions.

Thanks for all you help in the past and going forward.
