thank you Henry , we found an all chrome one with good glass and ball stud , for some brand X   . 
But it turns out ( of course ) the stud thread is different . 
We retapped  rod right through old tapping seems ok 
original are black? 
You ever notice they moved mirror to gauge hood in 58 ? 
No one liked that whole idea , plus it falls down all the time unless reworked .
In retrospect might consider modern glue on glass … if you want a real mirror you can use
