I agree with Don. The two hardest things on these federal style pumps is carefully pressing the pulley back on with the reservoir off and using a good support backing up the shaft ( a socket or an alternator spacer works well, just not bigger
in diameter than the shaft), and making sure not to mangle the reservoir sealing surface itself. Otherwise it's about as straightforward as possible and they still service the rebuild kit at most part places. If it's not noisy or failing to pump, it just needs
a good reseal and cleaning.
If you are really adventurous, you can put a hose clamp around the spring loaded slippers and compress it all so you can remove the shaft from the pump housing and replace the bronze bushings in the housing. Then you can give it all a really
good cleaning and soaking that way. Just be careful- those springs and those slippers really only go in one way correctly.

The only thing that ever goes wrong with most of these pumps is they leak. I rebuild them, and never replace the slippers or springs. I doubt they are even available. Dirt is the only thing that will ruin the bypass valve.
If it is stuck, you need another pump. I've been rebuilding them for years and never had a problem. The only one I had a problem with long ago was one I bought from a parts store. It almost put me into a guard rail when the bypass valve stuck. I put a used
on on and no more problem. I pretty much will not buy anything rebuilt from a parts store.

We used to call these 'Federal pumps' they are still available. Rebuilt are less expensive. I rebuild my own pumps. Kits about $45.

I have to hand it to the eBay sellers. Many advertise that they are selling a “rebuilt TRW power steering pump. When pressed and asked if they have replaced the scrappers and springs that all end up saying no. Just seals and pain. They really also never
replace the pressure valve. I love the English language skills of these sellers…
I am thinking of ordering one of the Saginaw pumps from Borgeson and seeing if it will work. I am tired of old so-called rebuilt pumps. For a driver, stock looking is not a concern.
