I do not beleive that the 55 tranny will work, as if I remember correctly it 
does not have a park position on it, I beleive that you can still find the 
spacer ring that is needed to mate the earlier (pre 62) engines to the later (62 
and newer) transmissions, as the crank shaft on the earlier blocks stick out 
about an inch farther than the later blocks.
