There were no 400's in 71 cars, they were all 383's. The easy way to
tell if the motor is in the car is
to look at the harmonic balancer. If it is thin, it is a 383, Steel
crank - if it is thick, cast crank - 400.
Bill is right, they started casting blocks in Apr of 71 for year 72
production.

A block cast in July, 1971 would most definitely be used in a 1972
model. The blocks are cast three or four months before being installed
in a car. They are usually stockpiled before assembly begins.

You can tell the model year of the engine by the engine number (ledt
side, rear of block) which gives the day the engine was assembled, or
the partial VIN on the block (right side, just above the oil pan to the
rear of the engine mount.) which is for the car the engine was
originally installed..

Mine was cast in July 1971, but i wonder if it was stuck in an early 72
car because the guy called  it  a 72 block, I was elated when I found
out that the date was July 1971. He also seemed to know enough about
Mopar , that he would know about the dates on blocks.
   As to the cold weather thing, my book, by Chuck Senatore is unclear,
   he makes it sound like all blocks between april and october 1971 were
   cold weather blocks in addition to being thick wall blocks which
seems
   hard to believe . He mentioned that the cold weather blocks had
larger
   than normal numbers cast on them. I dont know, I'll probably never
   know.
    I understand there was a 440 cold weather block too, but he  (
    Senatore) said in all his time he had only seen one.
   As a final note he also refers to them as industrial blocks as well
as
   cold weather blocks.
    I'm sure it doesnt matter cold weather or not, I'm sure the 71 block
    is plenty stout, as is the 72, which  I have also found , a complete
    running one.
