Rear axle "play" problem?

After removing the wheel from the drivers side rear end, I noticed I can pull out (and push back in) the axle about 1" or so.  Somehow I'm thinking that's not normal, but I'm hoping against all hope it's nothing too disastrous - like maybe just replacing the bearings?
 
This is an 8-3/4" 741 rear axle on a 64 Polara 500.
