Wally,
    I believe front and rear carbs both have idle  circuits, mixture 
screws,and air bypass screws...so they must both feed the  manifold at idle. Even the 
six packs used idle circuits, the factory set the  screws and plugged the 
holes. I have a set of '59 carbs that appear to be set up  to idle front and rear, 
but as you stated it runs on the primary rear barrels  initialy...then the 
front primaries,then both sets of rear barrels. Hope this  helps. Dan
