Hi
Chrysler Sized the speedometer pinions according to the number of
teeth on the pinion. In the parts book a chart is used to determine what
gear is used with a particular rear end ratio and tire size. The purple
gear has 18 teeth and is listed for use with the 3:23 to 1 ratio along with
6.50 or 7.00X14 tires on a six cylinder car. The same gear appears
for the 3:55 to 1 ratio and the 6.70 X 15 tire.

My apologies if this has been covered, but was told the color of the speedometer gearing on a 62 Plymouth would correspond to the ratio of the rearend gear. Different colors meant different gearing. Is this true and if so, what ratio does purple represent?
