Wally,

Thank you for the information. As I dig deeper on this car, it seems to have more and more that doesn't match the norm. It is an ex-Highway Patrol car, but even at that, things are not always what they seem. This is a 318 4bbl car with a speedo cable end colored purple. The tires are 7.00 X 14. According to your manual, this color would have to be on a /6 car, is that correct? This car also came with transmission cooling lines with a filter in the middle. According to my information, this was only available on big blocks, but do any of the manuals out there verify this? Looking for all the answers and assistance I can find.

One last thing regarding transmissions, this car also had brackets that attached to the bell housing and went to the back of the motor. (Tranny support brackets?) What types of vehicles did these particular items come on?

Thanks for all the help!!

Hi
Chrysler Sized the speedometer pinions according to the number of
teeth on the pinion. In the parts book a chart is used to determine what
gear is used with a particular rear end ratio and tire size. The purple
gear has 18 teeth and is listed for use with the 3:23 to 1 ratio along with
6.50 or 7.00X14 tires on a six cylinder car. The same gear appears
for the 3:55 to 1 ratio and the 6.70 X 15 tire.

My apologies if this has been covered, but was told the color of the
speedometer gearing on a 62 Plymouth would correspond to the ratio of the
rearend gear. Different colors meant different gearing. Is this true and
if so, what ratio does purple represent?
