Mopar started stamping the VIN on the engine in 1968 then the transmission, body tag and body in 1969. Prior to that the Shipping Order Number was the only way to note if the body matched the body tag. If he checks the engine number he can tell if the engine is in the ballpark (ie built a couple of months prior to assembly). The scheduled build date of the car is on the bottom line of the 1966-67 data tag, second set of digits from the right. The first digit is the month (A - Oct, B- Nov, C - Dec) and the other two the day. The engine number on the 440 is located on the left side of the engine, front of block, behind the thermostat housing. The engine number starts with a letter for the year (B - 1966, C - 1967) followed by the enigne size. After that comes the month, day and shift. If it was built on the first shift, there will only be the date. There may be other symobols and letters below the date. Those digits denote any variation from the norm for that particular engine. If you have access to the data tag, copy that and I can decode it. It will tell you just what the car had when it rolled out the factory door. Went to look at a Dodge Charger with a guy whos looking into buying it. The owner says its the original, "numbers matching" 440. Thats good , a factory 440 car.I told him he couldnt go wrong with that. BUT!!!- he wants to chek it all out to sniff out the guy and see if hes telling the truth. Heres the questions: 1) what year did Chrysler begin putting the VIN on the engines, I think it was about 67??? Who knows this one?? 2) Where do u find this number on the engine, to verify that it is indeed the original engine?? 3) Did the trannies also have the VIn numbers on them too?? If so where do u find that?? 4) Does anything else have the VIN like the rear end we should check out?? My buddy wants to know the guys telling the truth before he lays any cash on the hood, so I told him I would ask around.
