The "-3" designs a motorhome/truck engine (not the "T", as some manuals and books might mislead one to believe...) Prior to 74, the letter preceding the CID was a year code: for 65-73: A,B,C...J for 60-64: P,R,S,T,V. For 1974 and later, the "T" preceding the CID meant Trenton (not truck), the year designation was 4,5,6,7,8 and *preceded* the T<CID>, like 4T440 was a '74 440 built @ Trenton. the "-3" was a corporate designation for truck engines like: 318-3 361-3 413-3 440-3, and by 'truck' we aren't talking pickups like D-100s, we're talkin D-500 dump trucks and M-series motorhome chassis's. It is sometimes the case that not all of the engine pad's stampings are legible. see if the casting number is 4006630, 4006530, (or perhaps 3698830) and see if the casting date is for a model year 74 and later.... that might reaffirm/dispute my decode here...
