PPG has a sprayable product out that is safer to use than M3 metal etch that 
is applied by hand, the problem with washing down bare metal is getting the 
acid off completely, it is recommended that You rinse the treated areas down 
with soap & water this may not make sense to some but if You do not get all of 
the metal prep off it will continue to eat away at the metal long after You have 
primed, painted and are driving down the road.  This is especially true with 
large pitted areas were the acid is hard to get out without rinsing ('i.e.' 
Sand blasted metal)
Epoxy primer is the first substrate that should be sprayed on bare metal 
followed by 2 part high build. Most Epoxy primers can be painted over within 3 to 
7 days of application without sanding. this is especially handy when spraying 
the undercarriage, cross members, diffrentials, etc.
