That is not an exception. I learned from my friends in the Chyrsler 300 club 
about Chrysler's "Hidden" vin numbers that they use to verify true 300;s. 
There is another one somewhere on the rear frame rail that you have to remove the 
gas tank to be able to see it. 

These hidden VIN numbers where used by law inforcement to track stolen cars. 
They were moved around from year to year. The firewall VIN number stayed under 
the heaterbox for the early 60s. Im not sure how far it went. I know the 60, 
61 and 62 had it.
