My 1938 American Bantam used mechanical brakes right up to the end. 1941. 

Interestingly Crosly introduce disc brakes in the 40's. It was a terrible 
design and quickly canned. Chrysler then offered disc brakes on their 1950 and 
1951 Imperials before dropping them.
