The metal can kind that your car has is the same as any other metal can
kind. Some cars have the regulator built into one of the gauges that runs
off of it, such as fuel or temperature.
All the can does is chop your battery voltage down to about 5 volts by
opening and closing a set of contacts. To check it, ground the case and
power the Battery pin while monitoring the other pin. The pin you're
monitoring should switch between hot and cold.
