Pull the wire off of the sender Ground it and turn on the key. If the gauage move up then you need a new sender. If not then the gauage is bad. Just don't let it bury the needle. Have someone else in the car to turn the key on and off. They can let you know if the gauage work of not. I usually use a wire with clips and hook one to the wire and one to a ground. Then you can go inside the car and turn the key on your self and see if it work. If it start climing they you know it works. shut key off, proceed to parts store and get a new sending unit.
