I just put the 2 wires from the regulator together (in other
words,full-fielding the alt) ,rev the engine a bit and watch the ammeter. If
it jumps to the charge side and keeps going up to the high end of the
scale,then the alt. is OK.If the needle doesnt jump,replace the reg.

I did just that with my 65 Belv convertible last summer while on a drive to
western massachusetts and the regulator went.  I put a switch on the hot
wire and flipped it to manual charge every now and then while driving as I
noticed the alternator get down to a certain point on the ammeter dash
gauge.  I nice old guy stopped to help me when I was pulled over and after
we did it we talked about old cars for about 2 hours just standing there on
the side of the road.
So if you need a quick fix for a bad regulator, it worked for me.  Use the
largest gauge wire you can, it gets hot.

thoughtful posting from our esteemed web-master/guru/mopar guy. Cheap.

Assuming you have an original system, place a voltmeter on your battery to
see the voltage. Then disconnect the Field (green) wire from the alternator.
Start the engine and hotwire the positive battery terminal to the alternator
terminal from which you removed the wire. The volt meter should show that
it's charging, maybe as much as 18 volts. If not, you're alternator is to
blame. If so, check your regulator.
