1964 Dodge Dash Resto

The picture below will be familiar to anyone who has restored a 1964 dash.  My plastic panels are in good shape, but the silver plating is all shot.  What is the correct process for restoring the finish?  Can acceptable results be obtained on a D-I-Y basis?  Does anyone have a picture showing what this should look like?  I appreciate any suggestions...
