There's a busihng that goes between the breaker plate (the plate that moves
from vacuum advance) and the plat below it, which is solidly mounted to the
distributor housing. This bushing is probably worn, causing the gap
variances you described. Try pulling it apart to see what you have. Should
just be an "E" clip holding the breaker plate on at the bushing.
