Works for any regulator since you are effectively bypassing the regulator and running the alternator full blast to make sure its performing.
If the regulator is bad, I'd replace it with an electronic unit.

Dave,

Would that apply for a mechanical unit also?
Just pull the ignition and hot-wire it off the battery?
I'm not sure what the drop to 7V meant though.

Unplug your regulator, and with a voltmeter on your battery, give the green
wire that goes to the alternator 12V (with the engine running). If your
battery voltage goes to 17-18 then your alternator is fine.
Ballast resistor is unrelated.
Sounds like a regulator.

hi all,

Ive got an electrical question. New car, so im busy finding all the NEW
quirks : )
63 Plymouth. 440. Electronic Ignition. Old style voltage regulator.
Ive driven it only a couple hundred miles and just today the charging
system gauge started bouncing between discharge and charge at an irregular
rate.
I noticed this first during the day time then tonight as well.
The guage appears more "stable" when out on the highway at a constant
speed.


I can see the lights both dim then brighten again in time with the gauge
going from discharge to charge.

No engine skip or miss nor power loss in the engine.

So...............

Voltage regulator? ( anyone have a good test for this)

Alternator? (belt doesnt seem to be slipping)

All connections appear fine.

Ballast Resistor?


BTW, i checked the voltage on the voltage reg, between the terminal on the
adjustable side and ground. 13ish volts with lights on and looks to be
about 7 ish volts with lights off. is this normal?


Any thoughts?
