Is it only a driver, or for show? There is degrees in between to me such as nicer than a driver, but not a show piece. I find out my area of where this job needs to be to make my customer happy. The other approach has been to ask them straight out "how much are you wanting to spend on this work?" From there I will tell them almost to a tee what they can expect. All in all, doing business this way I have very few complain that I did not deliver what they had expected. If they end up showing a "driver" paint job at a car show or outdoor event, then they have no room to complain if they never paid for a "show" job. I know everyone always wants more in the end, but by making it totally clear in the beginning I have had very few issues arise afterward. I've had many come in for a driver paint job because it was cheaper and less time consuming and yet they are the very ones going to the rod runs and small car shows afterwards. As far as "horse trading" for paint work, it has never worked for me. I would as soon be paid then to trade for my expertise. If you then had something I wanted, I would then pay you. Most guys I see that have traded for paint work tend to find that they probably very seldom get what they expected. Unless one knows in advance what to expect, I would never expect show quality type paint work unless you have been told that is what you can expect upon pickup.
