On my own mopars, I've only lost one module and no resistors. Maybe I'm lucky and maybe there are just more guys running HEI distributors. Also, regarding the wiring diagrams, I don't know what is confusing you, but I have seen some very clear articles and diagrams within the pages of Mopar Action and sometimes Mopar Muscle. In particular, Rick Ehrenberg has discussed the issues extremely well on numerous occasions. Personally, I will stick with a nice, simple design that seems pretty reliable to me.
