I wouldn't use the vertigate shifter for a driver.  The first time I  saw one 
of those it was in a Plum Crazy '70 Challenger R/T 383 4 speed  car.  It had 
a tunnel ram 2 4's wide tires and the vertigate shifter.   It looked like a 
70's street race car and when a friend of mine and I tried to  get it in gear we 
had one hell of a time.   He ended up not buying the  car partly because of 
the shifter!
