The bolt pattern spacing is different between the small & big block A-727 trannys. Looking at the trans case, the measurement between the top two bolt holes, at 11 o'clock and 1 o'clock position, measures 7 3/4" for the small block & 6 7/16" for the big-block A-727. The 8.25 has an inspection cover bolted on with, I think, 10 bolts, while the 8.75 does not have an inspection cover.

Thanks,
Gary H.

I know to some of you these might seem like simple questions, but I will never know if I don't ask. How do you tell a big block 727 from a small block 727. The other question is how can you tell the difference between a 8 3/4 and 8 1/4 rear end? Thanks, Harry

The ironic thing about small block bell housings is that 4-speed small blocks have a bolt hole at the very top (12 o'clock)...because the 11 and 1 or 10 and 2 holes are so far part.

I cleverly posted this fact to the MML and was shredded to bids.....close together BB not so close small block.

the flat portion of the case is another good hint.

for the rear.....

if your car has bolts to hold the gearset into the housing on the u-joint side of the axle , you have an 8 3/4 or a ford 9 inch...there where a few older variations in the 50s but if you're not talking 50s then the statement
will most likely stand.

i should have added, that with my size hands, trying to span the distance of a small block's top bolt holes is a pain filled
stretch...the big block distance is easily spanned with even small hands....

a rule of thumbs (hands) of sorts...
