I had the following problem with a tapered axle differential. You may be talking about the thrust blocks. There are two and they are connected together with a split pin in the center of the carrier. If you look at the end of the axles you may see a spot on the end about 1/2" in diameter where they run against the axle. I had a 8 3/4" differential that I could not set the end play, the end play was huge. We pulled the axles and carrier and found the thurst blocks in the bottom of the diffrential. After we replaced them everything went together just fine. It appeared that the thrust blocks may have stuck to the axles and were pulled out when we pulled the axles. Dennis C.
