Menko, having just completed the same on my 63 Dodge wagon, the test ride
indicated my car was way out of adjustment even though I had measured the tie
rod lengths as you did. I found a link on how to do your toe in sitting at

Even though its for a Subaru the basics apply to any car. Using this method I
was able to get mine close enough to drive to the alignment shop without the
tires squealing. Hope this helps.
