I see! That's interesting. Didn't notice that, and as a matter of fact, I remember trying to upshift really carefully so I that the lever wouldn't click up too far. Maybe my detents were buggered. Wouldn't have been the only thing on that car, that's for sure.

That 400 sure had a lot more grunt than my 273, that's for sure. Maybe there's a 440 in my future, or at least a 360 in my Valiant!

The dual gate in the GTO's and 442's had small detents in the shifter
itself which acted as a ratchet shifter when used in the "his" mode so
you couldn't overshift. You had to push the shifter to the right to
actually use the detents. I had a 67 GTO before I saw the light and
that's how the shifter worked.
