1965 Satellite Transmission Question

Greeting fellow Club Members,
Here's the deal. I have a 1965 Plymouth Satellite with a 1974 440 engine and a 727B Torque Flite. The transmission I assume is the original as it's a cable shift. The shifter is a factory floor mounted shifter. I'm fed up with the current transmission woes which include a leak I'm unable to stop, a cobbled up throttle pressure linkage and just the cable operation in general. What I'd like to do is convert this over to a later model transmission with out the cable. I realize that I'll have to change the shifter to an after market (which I'm guessing will be a cable operated too) and also go with an aftermarket throttle pressure linkage set-up. Has anyone out there done this? What are the details? It does have an open driveshaft now so as long as the existing yoke will fit the spines of the news trans that should be OK as the length looks the same on the newer trans I measured today. Any pitfalls or additional help would be appreciated. Thanks.
