Brian Schlump wrote: Today I removed the clutch and checked it and the flywheel. All the mounting bolts were tight. The surface finish of each looked great, no heat checking or hard spots evident. The machining marks were still obvious on the surface of the clutch, and the surface grinding marks were still obvious on the flywheel. The thing that looked strange was the big difference in color on the face of the clutch plate. One half looked a normal dirty steel color, while the other half was a dark blue / brown color, almost like 1/2 of the clutch plate was contacting the disc differently than the other half. The same thing appears on the flywheel, but the brown color wasn't quite as dark as on the clutch. I'm still puzzled....Brian A guy suggested checking the surface of all the pressure plate/discs with a straight edge.He thinks they're cupped or warped. Dave Walters Denver, Co. That was a good call Dave. I couldn't get an accurate check of the 2 surfaces of the disc, however I could get a good check of the pressure plate. I laid a staight edge across the plate so that it touched on the OD across the normal color over to the deepest blue / brown color. At the ID of the normal color the plate had only cupped .001", but at the ID of the darkest discoloration, the plate had cupped .011". I wonder if this cupping would account for the fact that some fingers on the diaphram were sticking up at a different height, and would not contact the throw-out bearing equally? Even though the flywheel still shows the original grinding marks from being resurfaced, perhaps I should remove it and have it ground again before installing a new clutch.
