Wood carb spacer info

Dang it, I hit another blooper with my carb spacers. I got the phenolic 
Edelbrock 4 hole carb spacers and they don't fit my Weiand manifold. The 
problem is that the carbs have a dual mount pattern and the spacer uses 
the wide mount while my manifold has the narrow mount pattern. I 
definetly want the 4 hole style for bottom end improvement and all that 
is offered in wood is open. It probably is the wider pattern too so they 
wouldn't work. I decided to go ahead and just make a pair. I have a very 
knowledgeable wood working "A" team member, Terry Bohnert, who can do 
this for me. We discussed it and I think we'll make a dual carb, one 
piece spacer. I think it'll look pretty unique. I want it stained so it 
looks like wood too. I'm thinking it should be between 1 and 1&1/4" with 
slightly tapered venturi. 

Here's the questions: What wood? (We're thinking plywood and probably 
Baltic Birch.)
 What should we treat it with to seal the wood and not react with the 
gas? Varnish will melt. How about epoxy? Is urethane OK with gas?

Shoot me your ideas. (If anyone wants some Edelbrock #8711 phenolic 
spacers, I have two.)
