RE: types of shifting

Lets see how my memory works some 25 years later. We used to remove the synchros, and then every other tooth from the ring gears. (IIRC) At that point, about all you needed to do was tap the clutch and yank the shifter. Seemed faster than an automatic at the time. After the hemi ate up two of those trannys I went to Liberty gears. They had a wider ring gear with "cogs" spaced farther apart than the modified teeth on the original ring gears. I'm not sure if the regular gears were cut any different than the originals. Combined with a short Hurst super shifter and good linkage made for an incrediblely fast gear change, and rarely was there a missed shift.
Ofcourse, to move the car around when not racing, you could not down shift, and an up shift required clutching, shifting to neutral for a moment, then a quick pull to the next gear. (accompanied by a short nashing of the teeth.)The next race car had an automatic, and was a more consistant car, but not nearly as much fun.
