I live in Vancouver, Canada, and have bought several
vehicles((7) from the U.S.A. . United States Customs
has a "Vehicle/Equipment Export Team" that requires
info. on any vehicle exported, including a copy of the
Title & Bill of Sale. When the person bringing the
vehicle across arrives at the border, prior to
entering Canada Customs, they have to take all of the
paperwork across the road to have the Title stamped as
exported. The original request for export must be made
AT LEAST 72 business hours prior to arrival at border.
If these procedures are not followed, The
exporter/importer will have difficulties when trying
to get the vehicle through Canada Customs. As long as
you retain possession of the car & original title,
until you have been paid, you shouldn't be at risk for
a scam. To make things less stressful for the odd
seller, I have sent a deposit on one occasion, paid
the full amount on another. If the buyer is unwilling
to send you a deposit - $500 seems reasonable - then
I'd have concerns.
