This is not true in all cases. I put a 67 rear in my 64 Plymouth, and the rear is almost 1" narrower on each side. Spring perches were in the right place. 
I gained lots of room!

Gary, I'd like to remind members that when they swap in a later rear 
end, the track is wider.  For example, I put a 1968 rear into my 1964 
Plymouth, and it is 3/4" wider on each side.  There is not a lot of room 
on the outside wheel well as it is.  This is a very popular swap.
