There's another reason I can think of for converting to manual brakes especially if you're building a radical engine and that's with a radical cam you will not have enough vacuum to run the booster unless you install an auxiliary vacuum pump.
Then there's my friend with the 67 Charger race car. A few years ago he blew the engine just as he was crossing the finish line at about 130 mph. Not only did the car fill up with smoke so he couldn't see when the engine blew he lost all the vacuum to his power brake booster. He's lucky to be alive as he wound up out in the woods somewhere before he could get the car stopped. Needless to say he now runs manual brakes on it.

Manual brakes are far superior to power brakes for at least a couple of reasons. First, power brake boosters sometimes fail to boost while driving puting the driver in a spot with an extremely firm pedal to push. That is dangerous! Second, Driving with a correctly spec'ed manual master cylinder gives an easy to apply pedal with far better brake feel. It also lets the driver press as hard as he can while the booster limits total available travel, so you cannot apply the brakes as hard. Power brake boosters also add a numbing effect to brake feel. Those points reflect my personal experiences driving a lot of different vehicles with boosted and non-boosted brakes. By the way, I also drive with both feet, one for the gas and the other for the brake, assuming an automatic. Bob in Sacramento
