Yes Richard you can adjust some of the play out of the box but if you go too 
far it will start to bind. Where did you get a quote of $500 to rebuild your 
box? A rebuilt box from NAPA is about $140 exchange. And a rebuilt box with 
a firmer feel from Steer & Gear or Firm Feel is about $275 exchange.
