proper slip yoke clearance

what is a safe slip yoke sliding  distance . The cars my 64 cuda, the
trans is a 904, the rears an 8.75 .
  .  with the driveline installed it appears to be about  one inch
until it would botom out on back of tranny.  I can tell this driveline
has been custom made , its not OEM, so i want to make sure it was done
right
