Re: GM-Chrysler Merger Talks to Intensify After Election

I'm sure many of the folks on this list have visited a car dealer in
the last 6 months and learned what "book value" means in today's
economy, it is largely fiction. Whether you are talking about NADA,
Kelley or Edmunds, it will be high. Unless you are trading in a very
economical vehicle, preferably a Honda or Toyota less than 5 years
old, you are in trouble. Book value can be 20-30% higher than
reality. You might get a dealer who will actually talk to you about
how he arrived at the dismal $$ trade-in figure. They usually log
into the website for the auto auction they use and look at comparable
vehicles to your trade-in. They determine what those vehicles have
been selling for at auction in the previous 3-4 weeks, then undercut
that number by a few hundred bucks to cover their butts. I'm not
griping, this just is applying real-world data to their business
dealings. They can't allow $4000 on a trade-in, then auction the
vehicle and lose $600. If your trade-in is appropriate for the
dealership, such as trading a Dodge to a Dodge dealer, then the
picture is less grim. Used car sales is big money for well-run
dealerships.

Just my 1 cent (2 cents adjusted for this economy)
