the docs do call for a high temp stat but it seems popular to run a 160 for some reason. I will keep my 190 then. I've taken apart many engines with no thermostats to find an incredible amount of sludge inside, which is missing on engines with a hotter thermostat, especially. The additional heat is needed to boil off the gasoline that gets in the oil past the rings from normal operation, particularly in a carbureted engine. I imagine moisture needs to be burned off, as well. For instance, my off-topic 1969 Fury with stock 318 calls for a 195 stat (as do ALL 1969 Furies, regardless of engine), 16 pound rad cap, and came with a fixed, little four-bladed fan, and the smallest radiator I have ever seen in a Mopar. The radiator is MUCH narrower than a 22" standard radiator, and I have only seen these otherwise in slant six cars. Yet, in hot traffic, the temp gauge won't go past about one third. roger@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx wrote: > > With a stock therm stat and water pump I also run at 200 in hot times > when stop n go traffic. It's a 383 and it runs at 185 about normally. > Rebuilt big radiator w 16lb cap. Does running at 200 cause early wear? ---- Please address private mail -- mail of interest to only one person -- directly to that person.
