They look identical but have internal difference: --> long ram (D-500 Ram Induction): passage wall ran from plenum chamber below carb to cylinder head surface for maximum torque; tuned to lower rpm; came on passenger cars --> short ram passage went 10 1/2 inches from the cylinder head surface; tuned to higher rpms (circle track / drags); available through parts counter D-500 383 long ram: 330 hp @ 4,800 rpm & 460 ft lbs torque at 2,800 rpm D-500 383 short ram: 340 hp @ 5,000 rpm & 440 ft lbs torque at 2,800 rpm Using short ram manifolds, 282 degree solid cam, etc. a (1961?)
