Re: Fw: LONG RAM MANIFOLDS

Yeah, had the results backwards, but the principles I mentioned are how it works.

From the book "Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth Muscle" By Tony Young:

There were 2 versions: long ram and short ram. They look identical but have internal difference:

--> long ram (D-500 Ram Induction): passage wall ran from plenum chamber below carb to cylinder head surface for maximum torque; tuned to lower rpm; came on passenger cars

--> short ram passage went 10 1/2 inches from the cylinder head surface; tuned to higher rpms (circle track / drags); available through parts counter

D-500 383 long ram: 330 hp @ 4,800 rpm & 460 ft lbs torque at 2,800 rpm
D-500 383 short ram: 340 hp @ 5,000 rpm & 440 ft lbs torque at 2,800 rpm

Using short ram manifolds, 282 degree solid cam, etc. a (1961?) Dodge D-500 went 134.12 on the El Marage lake bed -- Hot Rod Magazine test

Thanks,
Gary H.
