RE: thumping sound in motor

Alex,

It was not found until the intake manifold was taken off. A lifter on 
the right side  was found that had it's plunger all the way down. The 
noise was first heard after a bad cold start. The engine backfired 
through the carbs and stumbled. The noise was there from that point on.
