RE: 1965 8 3/4 question

I've had a number of 8 3/4" housings on the rack and was surprised at the
number of different lengths. When we talk about axle shafts it's pretty
well accepted (here, anyway) that A-Body axles are 28", B-Body are 30", etc.
but the housings are all over the place.

It seems like the space taken by the differential should be constant, as
would the axle overall length (end to flange face). I can see how the track
would vary due to differing tire widths and wheel offsets, but housing
flange to housing flange (or axle flange to axle flange) would be the same.

I've seen the charts in the old DC books - that information must have come
from engineering, so I can only scratch my head and say "huh?".

I know that quality control back then was kinda loose as we see k-member and
engine perch locations move wildly... not sure how that plays into all this.

Somebody like DTS, Moser or Randy's ring and pinion must have their arms
around this, but I bet it's not information that gets shared.

Truly mysterious...

SC

I do remember about 4 years ago when I put a 65 axle in my 64 Polara that
the 65 unit was about 1" narrower than the 64, flange to flange.
