Re: starting 65 sport fury w 383

Thanks Tom. I am getting to work on the cables tomorrow. I jumped the starter out of the car and it ran and spun fine...

I agree with Gary and Rich, definitely sounds like Charging or Battery problem.

Sounds like first thing is to get rid of the clamped cable and replace with a correct length cable. Clean the terminals on the battery, make sure battery cells are filled up and charge the battery with a battery charger. Then install the new cables. If Click persists, could try jumping the starter relay. If still click, with no start, then it might be time to replace battery. Also, track down any additional wires hooked to the relay or solenoid that shouldnt be there.

The other thing it someone put in an alarm system in the 90s and I am not sure If I got all of it out... Half of the positive lead to the starter is probably 15 or more years old. You guys are great btw for helping.

Took the starter out and when I shorted out the solenoid w 12 volts the thing spun. sounded a little rough like the bearings were not great but it spun and the gear slid outward.. seems like the car should start. I have a relay that is about a year old. Could it be my ignition? BTW got decent battery with lights that are average brightness...
